Hi - Welcome to my SYKOSTE map pack

it includes new maps:

Octopolis

DEAF Star Assault

Entrenched
Lifes A Beach
Pier Pressure
Pillars of War
Radiator
The Hive
The Key

And some old favourites:

Chartres Fire

Templemental
Fusion
Fusion Squared

Enjoy - and most of all have fun. Remember some of these maps are very different to normal supcom maps - they have what is known to us as 'tactical terrain'. This means its not open-plain sailing. You must adapt your stategies and defense tactics that you may otherwise have not used in big open maps. These maps will extend SC and FA to new levels of strategy. Dig in and defend, push forward wisely, use the terrain to hide behind or ambush. Its all in the name of entertaining fun. If a FATBOY gets stuck - its because he is too fat. Use something else in that area and develop your tactics. These maps where developed to make you use those underrated level 1 and 2 bots, to make you switch strategies mid-way, to have walls that can block artillery rounds so you can build secret bases. certain areas only allow tiny level 1 engineers through - so you have to build up again from tech 1. These elements are all in there to add to the style of play so please enjoy them for what they are...

You will also find all of my maps in the GPGnet vault. Keep your eye out for more in the near future either on FileFront or the vault.

Thanks,

SYkoSte

Appreciation goes a long way. These maps where developed for our LAN game sessions based on what we wanted from the game. They may not be to everyone's taste - but hey, they should at least be available. Make your own choice, enjoy or wine at your leisure - but PLEASE don't winge to me. I much prefer positive feedback for my unpaid efforts than people picking up on MEX alignment and my spelling! wink

Due to the ineptitude of the badly supported GPGNET vault and the fact that my maps frequently receive excellent reviews on supremecommander.filefront.com. I have taken the liberty to create a map pack for you considerate chaps and chapesses, which contains all my maps for supreme commander(SC) and forged alliance(FA). Although some maps are constructed purely for supreme commander they will work perfectly on both SC and FA, with AI mods and with standard, online or offline.

Installation:

Couldn't be easier

win xp and below:
Just unzip the file into you supreme commander/FA installation folder, into the folder called /maps. Make sure you do not put the maps into 1 container folder. In you maps directory there should be 1 folder per map name - as it is in the zip file.

vista 32/64:
Just unzip the file into your DocumentsMy GamesGas Powered GamesSupreme Commander Forged AllianceMaps folder. Make sure you do not put the maps into 1 container folder as above. In you maps directory there should be 1 folder per map name - as it is in the zip file.

If you wish to install the maps into both SC and FA - just add the files to both the SC map folder and the FA map folder respectively.

bugs: none - but...

Some maps have limited paths - ie large experimentals cannot pass through say a canyon., This is deliberate - it forces the player to build these outside of the main 'fort' or closer to the enemy. We added elements like this to improve strategy. On some maps large walls can deflect artillary and affect flying elements path finding - ie. they have to go up and over or around. This is also deliberate to allow for more defendable positions. These are not technically bugs - just ingenious usage of a limited map editor. Some original SC and FA maps have a height of 32 - our maps can go up to 128 - so expect some big terrain.

The maps are big and large battles can take hours. On slower machines large battles will naturally slow down as more and more units are created - especially with 2000 unit cap with sorian AI. This is also not a bug - just a fact of life. If your map does slow down (ie +10 speed will feel like +0 speed) then in such a battle you will be glad! We recommend at least 4gb of RAM - and dual/quad core minimum.

Again on underpowered machines certain complex terrains can cause memory leaks - this just means your RAM can't handle the size of map. To avoid this you can avoid going into 'first person camera mode' when pressing ALT which can cause lock-ups on underpowered machines on complex terrains such as the London map. Our minimum spec machines run quad core/4gb ram/vista 64bit with no lower than 512mb 9800GT cards. We believe any thing below this spec is futile - but feel free to give it a whurl.

note: Some maps - like london have land bridges that are not passable by water units. This is also deliberate - it forces you to leave the water and adapt your strategy. These bridges can therefore be a defensive point or a tactical advantage. Make use of them - don't moan about it. If you want a totally passable flat map then these maps are not for you!

note: If you see a black map in FA turn off the cartographic mode in the options

note: if you see a default preview in the lobby it is an issue with FA - the player map positions still work fine - GPG never sorted or supported FA map creation. But we suffered to get them to work even at all.

note: Some of the maps are large - mostly suited to LAN games and COOP team based games. We have tested all maps for many hours and have no issues with AI - This said plenty of memory and a good graphics card is mandatory.

note: I have received some mild abuse about not using many props (rocks, trees etc.) or decals (marks, tracks, underwater coral) The main reason is that they add little to the gameplay or strategy on maps of this scale, and overly decaled maps can have in excess of 10000 decals at these sizes ranging from 20km to 80km. For that reason and under testing I decided that massive battles are more important than full zoom eye candy and the odd tree here and there. These maps are for strategy connoisseurs - not tree suckers.

Awesome map pack!

I recommend everyone download this.

But one thing, on the 'Deaf Star Assault' it's nearly impossible to build anything because of how the ground is shaped. Not sure if this can be changed but it makes the map near unplayable.

Everything else is perfect, <3 all the maps
