This is a section I hope you all like, it's where the staff can have their say on the SupCom series without having to do it under official constraints, we can say what we think about the games and try to give you an insight into our joys, concerns or just general thoughts and feelings. I (Digz) will start things off, and hopefully it will continue for all staff members and even members of the site to step in, I do encourage everyone to send us in their thoughts of SupCom, we really do want to hear from you!
Well to start things off, Supreme Commander, a fantastic game, played by many across the world hailed for it's new innovative form of gameplay with huge units and being able to see hundreds of units on your screen that will probably make your computer crash and burn. So, how far can Gas Powered Games (GPG) move the SupCom series forward?
Simple, Chris Taylor is advocating a new force to Supreme Commander, it will consist of a host of changes which will see mostly gameplay develop to make games much more tactical and strategic. For example in an interview with Computer and Video Games, he states:
"If I start the game and in the first 60 seconds I build a tank, I want that tank to be able to deliver the killing blow to my opponent 35 minutes to 90 minutes later."
So, one of the proposals the teams working on is having a rank level to units, like unit experience levels in the Battle for Middle Earth series. As the "tank" goes through the game killing things, it will grow in experience, therefore growing in levels, which will then enable it to be like a tech 2 tank or even tech 3 if it gets to that stage. Which is a brilliant idea, instead of building a tech 1 army, then having to rebuild because they can't grow or get better.
The new game seems to be getting along quite well, but one must ask how Supreme Commander 2 will be able to compete against the likes of Starcraft 2 and a possible Warcraft 4? It seems an uphill struggle, as the games multiplayer basis was not considered to be the best of the best as the requirements were extremely high, and being able to see so many units on the screen at the same time meant that players had to turn their graphics down in order to get a good 'lag-free' game online.
Multiplayer features are a must now for games, espeically RTS games, because the single player game can only go so far, and with gamers constantly looking for new challenges it seems to me that SupCom did not fulfill online gamers with the exciting, balanced gameplay that SupCom was hyped up to be.
There are of course a few solutions to this:
* Set up a ranked ladder that everyone can play on, even if this means including prizes for 'seasons' like the Command and Conquer series has 'Ladder Seasons', where at the end of each season they reveal the top 3 and then reset the ladder to keep people playing instead of stopping when they reach rank 100 as they know they'll stay there.
* Why not add a new type of gameplay, BFME2 and RotWK had 'War of the Ring' Mode, where it would be like a Rome Total War conquest game. GPG could put this into a planetary system and incorperate it with the story line.
SupCom 2 has some problems, mostly being based on what everyones seen on SupCom 1 and SupCom :FA. GPG really needs to address main issues like mutliplayer, factions being basically the same with units and buildings more or less mirroring each other, and another source for economy. The economy in SupCom was not, arguably the best and it really does need to be sorted out.
These are just some of the issues GPG needs to focus on at this early stage in development for SupCom 2, but there are still more things to be done, and hopefully these things will all be looked into and changed, otherwise I feel SupCom 2 will be just a 're-vamped' SupCom 1 with no real major changes that made the game so unpopular with so many right at the start.
